Included in the exhibition are work from the last 50 years, from the early days at Push Pin Studios with Seymour Chwast and up to the original 2014/2015 New York subway (vinyl sticker-style) poster for the seventh and final season of television drama Madmen.

Milton Glasers commissioned work range from Bob Dylan to IBM, Time-Life Magazine to Paris Match, store and restaurant design to toy creations, the major book publishers to record companies and of course also many of the logotypes we see on a daily basis.

Some, like his 1967 Bob Dylan poster for Columbia Records are icons; other design work like I❤️NY evoke his best known work.

He was also founder of New York Magazine, of which he was the fabulous Design Director.

PURPOSE will besides posters show selected work for the recording industry. He didn’t stop at doing the actual album artwork, for record company he also designed the record label, inner bags as well as company sleeves for various formats. He definitely gave both the artists as well as the record labels identity.

Milton Glaser on posters:

”I’ve been making posters for about half a century. For graphic designers, posters usually represent a special opportunity because they are large, coming close to the dimensions and authority of a painting, and they usually bear credit to their creator.

Most things designers work on are unsigned and have no public attribution. As the word “poster” reveals, the defining purpose of the poster is to be posted. It is at its core a public work, meant to influence its public.”

March 26 and May 1, 2022
Saturdays and Sundays between 12 - 16
The exhibition will be closed during Easter weekend April 16 and 17.
