Bruce and Stephanie run Materious, an award-winning design studio which has exhibited internationally, licensed designs for local and global companies, and self-produced commercial, experimental, and discursive products. They have recently published a book, Discursive Design: Critical, Speculative, and Alternative Things, which seeks to further legitimize and problematize alternate forms of design work that extend designers’ cultural agency.

In the talk 'Discursive Design: Not Just for Galleries Anymore' they will be discussing an expanded understanding of the role of design as it has shifted in the 21st century. The newest of these "fields" is discursive design, which involves the creation of artifacts (graphics, products, spaces, services, interactions, etc.) that are primarily tools for reflection, debate, and activism. This includes notions of critical design, speculative design, and design fiction, which have recently emerged, taking on broad sociocultural issues. While sometimes seen as "just" forms of art practice we will show examples of how they are being used to address practical, everyday problems. Our talk will allow for audience questions, feedback, and yes, dissent! In the spirit of discursiveness, come with a critical mind.
