IxDA: Strategic Design in corporate technology research by Joakim Formo

Our everyday things are increasingly becoming physical-digital hybrids. Our man-made world is now partly being made of stuff like software, clouds, data and radiowaves and becoming inherently dependent on being connected to global networks.

Technology is clearly affecting how designers are designing products and services, but can design even affect how technology is developed from the start?

Joakim Formo from the UX Lab at Ericsson Research will be using examples from internal research projects to explain how (and why) an in-house strategic design team works deep inside the technology research department of the global telecommunications giant Ericsson — close to the development of the technologies that will be part of our connected things in the near future.

Joakim Formo is a designer, inventor and Senior Researcher at UX Lab at Ericsson Research in Stockholm, where he leads multidisciplinary explorative research projects focusing on influencing emerging and near future technologies through designing tangible artefacts and concepts.
