About
The participants of this workshop will explore various lettering styles within the limits of a constrained design brief. Prior to the sketching phase, various samples from type design and lettering where physical properties serve as a base for the creation of letterforms will be presented.

The participants are then given a set of attributes that shall be incorporated into their lettering. The constraint will consist of an adjective (e.g. hard, elegant) as well as a lettering style (e.g. connected script, serif, cursive). The goal is to convey the meaning of the given adjective through the letter shapes. Further in the process the participants will have to com¬bine various adjectives into one lettering piece (e.g. hard on the outside, soft on the inside).

The drawn words shall be choosen considering the adjective and the style of the lettering or using online anagram generators. The participants will get a list of letters that has to be included as a minimum. Sketches are done analogue first. Each participant will then digitize and apply further detailed adjustments on two or three lettering pieces.

The resulting lettering pieces and all produced sketches will be presented in Grafill’s in-line gallery space Boks.
