Ordet bibliotek stammer fra det greske bibliothḗkē og betyr, blant andre ting, bokhylle. En av verdens mest kjente — og mest solgte — bokhyller er nettopp BILLY, en ganske så nøkternt, og til dels skranglete bokhylle fra IKEA. Det er mye man kan si om BILLY.

I skrivende stund ligger det over 2000 treff på BILLY på Finn. Noen selges for et par hundrelapper, mange gis bort gratis. I teorien er derfor tilgangen på selve hyllen demokratisert og enkel, men det å i det hele tatt kunne fylle en bokhylle med bøker i sitt eget hjem er ikke alle forunt. Og om du nå har anledning til å fylle den — hvilke historier forteller samlingen og hvordan klassifiseres så innholdet?

Med sitt vennlige og gjenkjennbare ytre er BILLY et godt utgangspunkt for kritikk fra innsiden.

BILLY ønsker å invitere inn til en kollektiv bygging av et lite fremtidsbibliotek for design. BILLY vil bli et midlertidig leserom i glassrommet på Grafill, som vender ut mot gateplan. BILLY ønsker å bidra til alternativ historiefortelling og sette søkelys på såkalt radikal katalogisering, nysgjerrighet, privilegier, spekulativ design, det inkluderte og det utelatte.

BILLY oppfordrer besøkende til å spekulere og fantasere om vår kollektive designfremtid, og videre være med på å bestemme og bygge innholdet i et nytt designbibliotek i miniatyr.

BILLY is a little future library for design, inspired by — among other projects — Eva Weinmayr’s «Library of Omissions and Inclusions» and Emily Drabinski’s «Teaching the Radical Catalogue». BILLY is one of many «little libraries», a «para-library», and a temporary reading room occupying the publicly accessible and street-facing glass room at Grafill.

BILLY’s aim is to activate local and global communities to engage in participatory design practices of the future, by lending out or donating publications they feel are missing from our collective realm of knowledge. With its innocuous and friendly framework BILLY appears innocent, which makes it a fitting vessel for critique from within.

Continuously in flux, Billy is meant to be re-organized, rewritten, re-shuffled, re-categorized and reused — hopefully providing for cross-pollination between the different design disciplines in an acute time of need.

Steward/Amateur Librarian

Thea Urdal is a journalist and designer (yes, confusing) and is very fond of text and textiles. Having grown up in a tumultuous family, libraries have always been a safe-space for Urdal — a place for dreams and world-building, with a certain enchanted aura. She did her somewhat naïve MA at the Oslo National Academy of the Arts on libraries and private collections and has wanted to deep-dive into this realm ever since. She hopes to take on the task of interim custodianship of BILLY with both vulnerability and humility, inclusiveness, care, joy and optimism.

Som en del av utstillingen vil det være et knippe tilknyttede arrangementer for å aktivisere samlingen, deriblant en filmvisning 19. oktober og Earlynerd den 27. oktober.
