At this breakfast seminar, one of the initiators of the Oslo Manifesto, Alan AtKisson, founder of the “17Goals” partnership to promote the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), will present this new global initiative and explain how you — and everyone working in design, or with designers — can be a part of it. What it means in concrete terms. And how that will help to realise this powerful global vision of a better world.

Alan AtKisson is an author, speaker, and senior consultant in the field of sustainability and transformative change who has worked in over 40 countries advising companies, governments, cities, NGOs, and the United Nations. In 2013, he was inducted into the International Sustainability Hall of Fame in 2013 in recognition of his many creative contributions to the field, including bestselling books, influential initiatives, planning tools, training processes, and even songs, all of which have spread around the world. A dual citizen of Sweden and the United States, he lives in Stockholm.

Last year at the United Nations, 195 nations came to agreement on a set of 17 new goals, for the entire planet. These goals cover everything from ending poverty to stopping biodiversity loss, from promoting gender equity to advancing innovation - globally. They are meant to be achieved by 2030. They are formally known as the “Sustainable Development Goals” (SDGs), and they have rapidly been embraced as a compass for many governments, businesses, educational institutions, and more.

But where are the designers? To build the world envisioned by the 17 goals, and to communicate these ideas powerfully to others, design will have to be at the heart of the work.

Out of this insight, born in Oslo, came the idea for the Oslo Manifesto. It is a document that calls on designers to think broadly and boldly about the SDGs, but it is also a global initiative, with its base here in Norden, providing resources and inspiration — so that designers, of all kinds, can play their important role as an essential part of the solution.
